Aquaponics is a food production system which combines olden times aquaculture and hydroponics. Aquaculture is an olden system in which aquatic animals such as fish, prawns and many other varieties of aquatic creatures are raised.Hydroponics is cultivating plants in water. In the aquaculture, the wastage of the animals accumulate in water which increases the toxicity in water for the fish. The toxicity is removed from the water by the plants through hydroponics system and the recycled clean water is recirculated back to the animals.
Aquaponics systems can be set up in small units like home aquaponics where the system can be set up at home backyard or in a small area to as big as large commercial units where the size of the unit is very big and provides very high profit using the same technology. The system can be set up either in fresh water or in salt water. But depending upon the aquatic animal or plant to be raised, the water type should be decided.
The aquaponics system is very Eco-friendly as the aquatic creature can be raised with less amount of water as recycling of water is involved and with no chemicals involved as the plants are used for cleaning the water. The system is highly profitable and very Eco-friendly.
